Multimedia traffic QoS adaptation in UMTS systems through a middleware functionality

چکیده
In this paper the authors’ attention is on the specification of a Middleware functionality for dynamic QOS control in multimedia cellular environments, such as UMTS. The functionality implements a soft QOS paradigm, at the same time optimising the perceptual QOS provided to the end user according to her/his needs. It will be shown that by exploiting suitable performance indexes and resource redistribution algorithms both an acceptable grade of service and a good degree of user satisfaction can be achieved, without an excessive increase in the network-signalling load.

A Distributed QoS Control Mechanism for Soft-QoS Provisioning in UMTS Multitier Systems
This paper investigates the topic of QoS provisioning both at the application and network level in an evolutionary scenario consisting of a UMTS multi-tier platform enhanced by a satellite coverage level and suitably thought for supporting multimedia traffic. In this “next-generation” scenario the main objective is the introduction of a distributed QoS control mechanism, with Middleware functio...
متن کاملEnhanced vertical handover based on 802.21 framework for real-time video streaming
This paper presents a novel middleware architecture in order to support multimedia services across inter–technology nodes in a seamless manner and with minimum perceived QoS degradation. The proposed architecture is based on the Media Independent Handover (MIH) framework. The novelty of the proposed architecture is based on a number of enhancements on top of the original MIH scheme. Firstly, th...
متن کاملA Mobile QoS Interpretation, Definition and Maintenance Framework for 3 Generation Mobile Systems
The Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS), viewed as the wireless access part of a backbone ATMbased broadband services fixed network (B-ISDN), serves the goal for future integrated communications. One of the major issues for the deployment of UMTS high-bandwidth and real-time multimedia applications, is the specification of acceptable Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for mobile...
متن کاملPerformance of W-CDMA UMTS radio access interface with mixed traffic
The provision of multimedia services to mobile users is one of the main goals of Third Generation (3G) systems. The traffic being transferred within 3G mobile networks will be composed by different information flows with various constraints on the required QoS (bit rate, delays, etc. . . ). In order to reach such a goal, 3G standardization bodies have designed highly-flexible radio interfaces, ...
متن کاملImpact of Control Theory on QoS Adaptation in Distributed Middleware Systems
In ubiquitous computing environments, various distributed multimedia applications will be desired. Examples of such applications are video-on-demand, video conferencing, visual tracking and others. For these applications to be accepted, they must deliver desired quality of services (QoS) to the users such as desired video frame rate, tracking precision, and minimal loss of information. This is ...
